I just got done with this same issue on an a ML150 G6 with a Smart Array P212 raid card. We normally buy IBM servers but because the price of the HP server was so much less we decided to go with HP instead...I ran the HP (not) so easy CD setup and went to install Server 2003 and the BSOD happened...So after running the install again a few times with different hardware configurations, i called HP and they were not very helpful. They wanted me to download some new firmware but on DVD. but because there was no DVD burner around i tried the USB key solution instead. While waiting for the large HP download, I decided to try an install without using the HP Easy CD and it worked fine with no issues. So turns out that the Easy CD HP 1.00 (b) sent with the servers missing some critical drivers. Never the less, its up and running but like everyone else has mentioned HP really needs to solve this. It causes hours of extra work time.

I had the same problems with ML150 G6 with a E200 SmartArray. It took me days to try different setups and combinations of OS and drivers etc. Until I came across your post. I started the install using the built-in CDROM, and then went into the BIOS and disabled the onboard SATA controller when the installer rebooted in the middle and everything worked fine! You really saved my bacon! Thanks a lot!

Yes ist works fine!
I have the same problem with a SC44G-controller in a dl180g5 with 4 sas-hdd.
No installation of win2003 is possible (2008 works fine) when the internal sata-controllers are activated. Blue Screen of Death 30 sec. after grabbing the driver from the fdd.
With an external dvd-drive it works fine. After the installation I have re-enabled the internal sata (only the one with the cd-rom on it) and the cd works fine too.
Thanks a lot for your blog, but why are no notice about this issue on the hp-homepage??????
That's the annoying point of that!

I spent two days on troubleshooting this issue with no success. I integrate the smart array driver for the E200 with nLite , hoping it works. But the 0x0000007B BOD makes me crazy. So after reading your post here, i search for a external HDD Drive (IDE), plug a DVD Drive on it and plugg off the internal SATA drive on the HP Server. So - it works. Windows Server was installed ;-) I think that HP should think about some things. I mean - the server is very cheap, but it couldnt be, that an IT Engineer spent so much time on a "normal" installation. This occurs costs for many companys.... so great article here!

Интересно - кто виноват - Майкрософт или НР?

Very nice solution Saladin, I also encourage IT pros to use nLite and vLite (Vista version) for such issues. Unfortunately, where I was when the problem occurred, I had no Internet access to download nLite and the installation of the DL180 had to finish immediately. That is why I 've chosen the method I described above.

Thank you very much for your valuable info and for taking the time commenting on my blog.

Hi,

We had a similar problem - we were given two DL180 G5 servers to role out into production We encountered the problem of installing Windows Server 2003 on them. Naturally, the Smartstart CDs do not work on these servers and the CD that HP ship with them is not helpful in the same way. After blurting out some exquisite expletives at HP for making life difficult we started to have a crack at the problem. My colleague steven.nayyar@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk came up with a very smooth solution and it made the whole thing a piece of cake.

He went to http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/1/ and downloaded the nliteos (http://www.nliteos.com/) freeware for slipstreaming and also the instructions for its use.

He then ran the software and packaged the Windows Server 2003 source CD and used the wizard to service pack it. He also used the wizard to pack in the drivers that come with DL180 cd in TXT mode on to the same single CD that he burnt.

From here, just insert the CD and reboot the machine and follow the instructions. It maybe necessary for you to delete and re-create the partition but have a play and at least you’ll get there.
